Neoseiulus californicus
The entomophage in the Phytoseiidae family has the qualities of predatory mites of types I and II, thanks to which it is very versatile in use.
Its priority victim is the spider mite, but in their absence it also eats other types of phytophagous mites, as well as thrips and small insects. It can feed on plant pollen if its main prey is unavailable.
The mite prefers a warm climate and actively develops at temperatures from +10 to +33 degrees. It is able to overwinter at night temperatures below zero. It is unpretentious to air humidity — it is active in the range from 40 to 80%, but it is most effective in hot and humid conditions.
Adults reach 0,1 mm in size and have a translucent pale yellow or pale orange colour. Females are slightly larger than males and lay up to 4 eggs measuring 0,04 mm per day. Depending on the temperature, the full development cycle takes 4-12 days. The average lifespan of an adult mite is 20 days. Neoseiulus californicus is capable of consuming 5 phytophagous mites per day. It shows particular effectiveness in the fight against the double-spotted spider mite.
Application of Neoseiulus californicus:
It is better to introduce predatory mites on plants proactively (prophylactically) before the appearance of the pest, then the effect will be maximum. Neoseiulus californicus against spider mite on cucumber is used in norms, as a rule, at least 25 individuals per plant.
The recommended quantitative rate of release of Neoseiulus californicus largely depends on the culture, type and density of the pest. This entomophage can tolerate the use of some miticides.
