Hypoaspis miles

Hypoaspis miles, or according to the latest classification Stratiolaelaps scimitus is a small predatory mite in the family Laelapidae. It is effective in the fight against a wide range of pests: sciaridae, thrips, nematodes, springtail larvae. It lives in soil and plant residues at a depth of up to 4 cm, therefore it is most suitable against pests of the root system of plants.

The size of an adult individual of the Hypoaspis is on average 0.5-1 mm, the colour can vary from light beige to orange and brown. The optimal temperature range is from 15 to 30 °C Prefers a humid environment, but cannot withstand flooding. 

The development cycle from egg to adult takes 7-10 days, and the life span is up to 80 days. The female lays an average of 5 eggs per day, which become larvae in 1-2 days, and the larvae themselves begin to actively hunt on the second day after emerging from the egg. Adult female mites can destroy up to 8 gnat larvae or up to five nematodes per day. At the same time, mites are able to travel considerable distances in search of prey, and if the main food is not available, the entomophage is able to switch to eating plant waste and live up to 7 weeks with such a diet.

Application of Hypoaspis miles:

To achieve maximum results, it is recommended to introduce entomophages proactively (when the pest has not yet appeared or its number is low). Depending on the pest population, the quantitative rate of application may vary and averages 100 predator individuals per m2. It is important to remember that Hypoaspis miles, unlike other species, is not applied to the leaves of the plant, but to the substrate near the root system.
