This misconception is connected with the application of formulas to the insect according to which the lifting forces for aircraft were calculated. A physicist, Zheng Jane Wang, refuted this judgement by simulating on a supercomputer the speed of movement of wings and air flows around fast-moving objects.

The importance of bumblebees

Bumblebees have a crucial role in agriculture as pollinators of various crops.

In protected ground as greenhouses, the use of bumblebee families has been practised for more than 30 years. Moreover, the dynamics of implementation increases every year. Only over the past 10 years, market research has shown an increase in demand by 5 times. This is due to the fact that bumblebees save man-hours and are also more efficient than mechanical pollination methods.

At the moment, the most popular species is the large earth bumblebee or the buff-tailed bumblebee (Bombus terrestris), the use of which began about 30 years ago, using it as a pollinator of tomatoes. But during the use it was discovered and proved that they are equally effective in pollinating nightshade, melon, pumpkin and fruit and berry crops.

Bumblebees or bees?

Bees also cope with the role of pollinators quite well. But bumblebees, given the larger size of individuals and the presence of more bristles on the body, cope with this task more efficiently by collecting and carrying 2-3 times more pollen on themselves.

A longer proboscis gives bumblebees an advantage in pollinating some flowers inaccessible to bees. Larger sizes perform an indirect function, helping plants in self-pollination. When planting, the bumblebee shakes the flower, as it were, additionally spreading pollen.

Bumblebees are hard workers. Of course, we can say that bees are smarter, because in search of more saturated food sources, they use a method of communication known as the “Dance of Bees”, thanks to which they move to more interesting nectarines for themselves. Bumblebees do not dance, so pollination takes place on specific plants that we need.

Features of bumblebees

It is impossible not to note the warm-blooded bumblebees. They got this name for their ability to warm up their body to a temperature of 40 C by rapidly contracting the pectoral muscles. This feature gives an advantage in activity at a low temperature. Already at +8C, bumblebees begin their work, whereas a bee at +12C will only be about to fly out of the hive. With this feature, the bumblebee resembles a car on a winter morning, to go you need to warm up, with the difference that the bumblebee does it almost instantly. Thanks to this, they can start working early in the morning and finish late in the evening, they prefer to spend the hottest hours in the hive.

The flight speed of a bumblebee is twice as high as that of a bee. We add to this the specifics of the flight path and get the fastest possible cross-pollination of our plants.

Bumblebee research

Another interesting fact was found out during the study of the large earth bumblebees Bombus terrestris. The study was conducted by entomologists from the Swiss Higher Technical School in Zurich. The theory is based on the synchronisation of plants flowering with the cycle of departure of bumblebees. Scientists were interested in how the large earth bumblebee withstands a lack of food if the plant does not bloom for a long time, whether this leads to the death of individuals and the absence of further pollination. To this end, an experiment was carried out to observe and interact individuals with plants that have a delay in the flowering cycle.

Research progress

Bumblebees representing different colonies were left in a closed room with cabbage and solanaceae seedlings without flowers. For 14 days, plants were replaced daily, and after 7 days, individuals were replaced in order to avoid their death. After that, the flowering time of plants was compared with the same species from the focus groups that had no contact with Bombus terrestris. It turned out that plants in contact with bumblebees bloom 15-30 days earlier. Finding out the reason for the accelerated development, scientists found punctures on the leaves. Bombus terrestris performs up to 10 punctures on a leaf of a certain shape, while not feeding on the plant and does not take plant tissue into the colony. The scientists repeated the punctures themselves to analyse the result. Plants damaged by humans began flowering 4-5 days earlier. From which the theory arose that bumblebees introduce certain substances that accelerate flowering when plants are damaged, but this theory still requires biochemical analysis to confirm.

After research in the laboratory, scientists have created an environment that is the closest to the real one. Bumblebee hives were installed on the roofs, near which flowering and non-flowering plants were planted. Bumblebees were not restricted in food, but they also made punctures on plants with delayed flowering. Given the open conditions of the experiment, other species of bumblebees flew to the roof and their behaviour did not differ from Bombus terrestris. From which it was concluded that this type of behaviour and interaction with plants is characteristic of wildlife.

Conclusion

Bumblebees are irreplaceable assistants in the field of agriculture. Studies have shown that in addition to effective pollination, they can accelerate the flowering process of a plant by synchronising it with their life cycles.

Bumblebees are a hymenopteran insect of fairly large sizes 1-3 cm.
