Its natural habitat is limited to the Mediterranean, and therefore it is endemic to this region. In its natural habitat, it can be found on many crops, such as apples, citrus fruits, cotton, etc. It was first used as a bioagent in 1983 in California on citrus trees. Since 2005, it has been actively tested in Europe, the Americas and Asia, which led to the expansion of the habitat of <em>Amblyseius<\/em>. At the moment it is considered an effective method of bio-protection of plants from mites, thrips and whiteflies and is grown in the USA and Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Description<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Amblyseius swirskii<\/em> is a microscopic mite, the size of which varies in the range of 0.3\u20130.7 mm. The arachnid class causes the presence of 4 pairs of legs. The body is conventionally divided into 2 segments: gnathosoma, which includes the predator&#8217;s mandibles; and idiosoma \u2014 the second part of the body, on which the legs are located. The upper part of the mite is covered with sparse bristles. The colour of the acariphage is unstable and is not a characteristic mean defining the species. The colour of the mite depends on the food supply (<em>you are what you eat<\/em>). When feeding on whitefly or thrips, the characteristic colours will be light shades of yellow and brown. It is not necessary to try to distinguish with the naked eye <em>Amblyseius<\/em> from his <em>Phytoseiidae<\/em> relatives. Even if it is possible to see it without magnifying equipment, then classifying differences is already a matter for entomologists or at least agronomists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Life cycle<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The life cycle of <em>Amblyseius <\/em>has 5 stages, standard for predatory <em>Phytoseiidae<\/em>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Egg<\/li><li>Larva<\/li><li>Protonymph<\/li><li>Datonymph<\/li><li>Imago<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The egg has the shape of a flattened ball with a diameter of 0.12 \u2014 0.16 mm, transparent white. They are usually found on the underside of the leaf on leaf hairs, to protect the offspring from other predators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The larva of the first instar, as well as the egg, is transparent-white. A characteristic difference is only 3 pairs of legs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Protonymph and deutonymph acquire a darker colour and already have 4 pairs of legs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Imago is an adult individual of a mite<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The entire development cycle of <em>Amblyseius swirskii <\/em>takes place in just 1 week at a temperature of 23-25C, while the predator is active at all stages of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Features of Amblyseius swirskii<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Amblyseius swirskii<\/em> is considered a generalist predator of type III, unlike other types, it has a more expanded host spectrum and can feed on pollen and nectar of plants in the absence of victims. The entomophage is native to the Mediterranean region, therefore it prefers a warm climate and develops at a temperature of 20-35C. In the absence of a sufficient number of victims and the use of plant food, <em>Amblyseius swirskii <\/em>develops more slowly and produces fewer offspring. During the period of inactivity, it hides on the back of the leaf. It is also made universal by the absence of diapause characteristic of many species of mites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Food<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Amblyseius swirskii<\/em> is effectively used to control populations of various species of thrips, whitefly and phytophagous mites. They mainly eat eggs and larval stages of pests, but they can also destroy small-sized adults. In 2012, a study was documented confirming the control by <em>Amblyseius swirskii<\/em> of the Asian citrus psyllid. A female <em>Amblyseius swirskii<\/em> is capable of destroying up to 20 eggs or up to 15 larvae of the victim per day. Particular effectiveness is noted in the control of young whitefly individuals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Recommendations for use<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To achieve maximum results, it is necessary to work ahead of the curve and introduce <em>Amblyseius swirskii<\/em> on the plant, as a preventive measure, before the appearance of phytophagous pests. The average standard for the use of entomophage as an antagonist of whitefly on cucumber is usually at least 50 individuals per plant. There is also a universal strategy for introducing a predatory mite. In the absence of a pest, as a preventive measure, 25 individuals of <em>Amblyseius swirskii <\/em>are introduced per plant every 14 days. When the first signs of a pest are detected, it is necessary to double the number of individuals and introduce 50 mites at the same frequency of 14 days. If the pest population has already reached a high level, it is necessary to use 100 individuals per plant and repeat the procedure every 7 days until the results appear, further adjusting the amount of bioagents introduced. If you are able to independently estimate the pest population, then you can use this simple algorithm of 25-50-100, depending on the needs. But it should be remembered that every culture and every pest has its own specifics, and an individual approach to solving each problem is necessary.
