The entomophage is a polyphage and eats a wide range of victims. In greenhouses, they are mainly used for the prevention and destruction of fungus gnats (<em>Sciaridae<\/em>), shore flies (<em>Scatella spp.<\/em> and <em>Ephydridae spp.<\/em>) and thrips that pupate in the soil like western flower thrips. Like the <em>Hypoaspis miles<\/em>, it indirectly controls thrips colonies by eating pest puparia, and is often an underappreciated tool in a biocontrol program. Underestimating the capabilities of the <em>Atheta coriaria<\/em> is a big mistake, because the violation of this part of the life cycle of thrips has a significant impact on their population as a whole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Adult beetles are very mobile. They will crawl or fly from pot to pot and from one section of the greenhouse to another, eating pests all the way. This makes them effective even in hydroponic greenhouses without soil. In such situations, it is strongly recommended to use breeding boxes, since placing them on mineral wool is relatively inefficient for creating populations. Even in traditional greenhouses with soil, breeding boxes can be an excellent addition (but not a substitute) for soil wiring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Description<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Adults of <em>Atheta coriaria<\/em> have a colour from dark brown to black, a slender body 3-4 mm long and outwardly resemble earwigs, only smaller. Their elytra (leathery hind wings) are truncated, which means that they stop about a quarter of the way down the body, such a feature is a characteristic feature of all beetles of the family <em>Staphylinidae<\/em>. To fold the membranous wings (those used for flight) under the elytra, use the abdomen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beetle larvae have a slender oblong body shape similar to the imago. Unlike adults, they are yellowish. Outwardly they resemble worm-like, but 3 pairs of legs and short antennae make it possible to distinguish them from other inhabitants of the soil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Life cycle<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The life cycle of <em>Atheta coriaria<\/em> consists of 4 stages<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Egg<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At an optimal temperature of +26C, the egg develops for about 2 days, after which the larva appears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Larva<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The larvae live about seven days before pupation, while actively feeding and destroying pests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Pupa<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pupation takes a little less than 8 days. As a result, it takes about 17 days from egg to adult, depending on temperature conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Imago<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Adult females live about 48 days, and males about 60. Females lay about 100-150 eggs, of which about 70% will eventually become adults.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since they spend most of their time in the soil, the ambient temperature is less important for them compared to other biological protection agents. They can survive the winter by digging deep into the soil, even in areas where the temperature drops below zero.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Advantages<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Under proper conditions, the <em>Atheta coriaria<\/em> quickly takes root in greenhouses and other growing rooms. Their tendency to explore and search for food sources makes them a valuable resource for almost any biological defence program. Because of their mobility, they can be used in hydroponics, but, again, if there is no soil in the room, breeding boxes are highly recommended. They are also a huge help on any object with a dirt or gravel floor, since soil pests are often found there. <em>Atheta coriaria<\/em> does not diapause in low light and is active all year round.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Application<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Atheta coriaria<\/em> is used to protect a wide range of crops, as well as fungi. It is recommended to use in greenhouses, due to the active mobility of the insect. A high level of adaptation to various substrates (min cotton wool, coconut fibre) makes it possible to effectively use the beetle in hydroponics conditions. For higher efficiency, it is recommended to use it in conjunction with <em>Hypoaspis miles<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Recommendations<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In order to obtain maximum effect, it is recommended to introduce entomophage until the pest population has reached critical proportions. The average rates of introduction of a predator are 1-5 imago individuals per 1 square metre. In the foci of development, this value is increased to 10 individuals per 1 square metre.
