But apart from the name of the entomophage, in general, nothing has changed. <em>Hypoaspis miles<\/em> is still a small predatory mite of the family<em> Laelapidae<\/em>, living in the upper layers of the soil. The natural habitat is Europe and the USA. In addition to greenhouses, this mite is also popular among amateur flower growers and owners of ant farms, reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates. This is due to the effectiveness and environmental friendliness of the biological agent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Description<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Hypoaspis miles<\/em> is a predatory mite 0.5\u20131 mm in length. The body colour varies in light shades of a range of beige, brown and orange colours. The body is conditionally divided into 2 segments \u2014 gnathosoma and idiosoma. The gnathosoma is a collection of mouth parts and looks like a small process on the body. The idiosoma is the main part of the body, which is equipped with 4 pairs of legs characteristic of arachnids. They live in plant residues and moist soil, but they do not tolerate flooding and die in stagnant water. Despite the comfort zone at +25C, the <em>Hypoaspis miles<\/em> begins its activity already at +15C. A decrease in temperature below +10C and growth above +34C will negatively affect the entomophage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Life cycle<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The life cycle of the acariphage is simple, like everything ingenious. Mites go through the stages of egg, larva and imago. The ratio of females to males in the colony is about 50\/50. Sexual dimorphism is expressed in smaller sizes of males.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The egg is spherical, slightly flattened, transparent white. At a comfortable temperature of +25C, it develops within 1-2 days and passes into the stage of the nymph (larva).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The larva develops very quickly and becomes an adult in 5-7 days. At the first stages of development, the nymph of the <em>Hypoaspis miles<\/em> has 3 pairs of legs and a translucent colour, in the process of growing up it acquires another pair of legs and darker shades of colour. At the same time, the nymph of the mite begins to actively feed on pests already on the 2nd day after emerging from the egg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Imago is an adult acariphage. Usually, the entire development cycle lasts 7-10 days, and the life expectancy of an adult is 30-80 days. Females live less than males. Every day, the female of the <em>Hypoaspis miles <\/em>lays up to 5 eggs, which is 100-200 pieces throughout the life of an individual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Food<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Hypoaspis miles <\/em>or as it is now accepted <em>Stratiolaelaps scimitus<\/em> is a soil mite. It lives in the soil and plant residues at a depth of 1-4 cm, therefore it is effective against pests encroaching on the root system of plants. It is the method No. 1 against<em> Sciaridae <\/em>larvae, which also prefer moist soil. Furthermore, it can be used in the complex fight against thrips, as an auxiliary tool, eating its larvae at the pupation stage. In experimental studies, the predator has shown itself well in the fight against nematodes. An adult individual destroys up to five pests every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This hard worker devours everything that is in the soil, whether it&#8217;s sciarids, thrips, nematodes or collembola nymphs. <em>Hypoaspis miles<\/em> is able to travel considerable distances in search of prey. In the absence of prey, they begin to feed on plant waste and live on foot food for up to 7 weeks. Even under such harsh survival conditions, cannibalism is not observed in the species. But the population is declining due to the consumption of eggs of its own kind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Application<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Due to the preferred habitat, <em>Hypoaspis miles <\/em>is mainly used on soil crops. The mite can also be used in hydroponic crops, but this will require the creation of an artificial habitat for the entomophage. To create conditions for development, leaves, organic residues, sawdust and similar materials are usually used. It is important to control the increased humidity of the substrate and the temperature of at least +15C. But at the same time, do not fill it with water over the norm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In order to achieve maximum results, it is recommended to introduce a predatory mite prophylactically, or while the pest population is still at a low level. Application rates are about 100 mites per 1 square metre, depending on the pest population. In places of maximum accumulation of phytophages, the number increases. Unlike other mites, <em>Hypoaspis miles<\/em> is introduced not into the leaves, but into the substrate, in the root zone of the plant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">It is important to know<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The entomophage of this species lives long enough, which compensates for not very high fertility. In order not to reduce the population and life span, it is important to know that <em>Hypoaspis miles<\/em> reacts extremely poorly to many types of synthetic pesticides and is absolutely incompatible with soil insecticides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When buying, you should pay attention to the packaging. <em>Hypoaspis miles<\/em> is a soil mite, it is important to avoid direct sunlight. During storage and transportation, it is necessary to observe the temperature regime of +15C \u2013 +20C.
