Trichogramma

A small (up to 1 mm in size) parasitoid insect from the Trichogrammatidae family. It is used to control more than 200 species of lepidoptera pests, including scoops, codling moths, whiteflies, moths, etc. 

The life expectancy is small — only from 3 to 14 days. During this period, an adult Trichogramma manages to hit from 50 to 100 pest eggs, on average 10 per day. The entomophage larva lives in the host egg and feeds on its tissues. Affected eggs, as a rule, change colour to dark. The development period of an adult is from one to two weeks. The insect emerges from the pest’s egg already fully formed and ready for reproduction. The optimal temperature for the development of the population is 25-30°C. 

Application of the Trichogramma:

Trichogramma is used in protected cultivation against a wide range of pests at the egg stage and differs from other species in very high efficiency and low cost. A series of applications is effective at the rate of 250 to 500 thousand individuals of a Trichogramma per 1 ha with an interval of 7 days. The introduction of a Trichogramma is the most crucial moment in its application. It is produced during the flying stage of lepidoptera, while the pest is still in the egg stage and has not developed into a larva.
