Amblyseius montdorensis

An entomophage in the family Phytoseiidae. Transeius (Amblyseius) montdorensis is used to control various thrips, as well as whitefly and spider mite colonies, but they are not its priority target. Potentially controls the russet mite (Aculops lycopersici).

It is a small predator of light beige colour. For its detailed consideration on the sheet, optical devices with a multiplicity of 40-60 are required. The size of an adult is up to 0.38 mm. Eggs are oval in shape, up to 0.14 mm in size.

As a habitat, montdorensis usually prefers the underside of the leaf blade and lays eggs there for protection from other predators. The proportional number of males and females in the population is 40/60, but depending on the habitat conditions, this ratio may vary. The optimal temperature range for this mite is from +20 to +30, and the humidity is above 65%. The life cycle from an egg to an adult at +25 degrees is carried out in less than a week. There is no diapause when daylight is reduced. On average, a female mite destroys 14 thrips larvae per day.

Application of Amblyseius montdorensis:

Preventive application of entomophages to plants is recommended (even before the appearance of the pest), then their use will be more effective. Usually, Amblyseius montdorensis is used to control thrips at a quantitative rate of 50 predator individuals per plant. A universal approach to application is considered effective:

  • Prevention (there is no pest) — apply 25 mites to the plant once every two weeks;
  • At the first signs of the appearance of pests- 50 individuals per plant every two weeks;
  • With an increase in the density of the number of pests — 100 individuals per plant every week until the number of pests decreases.

After application, the places of release of the predator should be marked, especially if the amount of the pest was large before. In the future, these areas are regularly checked to track the acclimatisation of mites and their effectiveness.
